The CCFF was our first self-led in-house project to shake up the climate action space. Environmental film festivals are not new, but in 2019 most pre-existing events in this space had not adapted to properly grapple with the climate crisis. The challenge for the CCFF was simple, yet ambitious: reinventing the environmental film festival format to respond to the urgency of the climate emergency — and to the need to empower every attendee to take meaningful climate action.
The strategy of the CCFF could be summed up as using the emotional power of cinema to set the stage for climate action. Film screenings are followed by speaking events that push the boundary of what is customary at film festivals — from Ignite Sessions to Action Rooms, speakers and accompanying digital resources engage audiences in innovative ways.
The CCFF brand experience is designed to be sleek and immersive. Powerful cinematic photography serves to highlight the event's human focus and diversity of voices. In 2021, audiences tuned in for free from 143 countries around the world through a custom-designed worldwide streaming platform developed in-house. 73% of attendees said that they felt "more empowered to act" thanks to the festival experience.
