In May 2021, three activists filed a lawsuit against the UK government in a case against using public money to further oil and gas companies. After signing the Paris agreement in 2016, the UK government has continued to pay billions of public money to North Sea oil and gas companies. Lead by Michaela Loch, Kairin van Sweeden and Jeremy Cox, Paid to Pollute aims to hold companies like Shell and BP accountable while diverting public money away from polluting industries.
